What about dropping this altogether and provide a good shell that does it ?
You could put the username in the resin xml config file, so that at the end
of the day it'd be exactly the
same...

Just saying, maybe this would simplify things, and certainly take a fraction
of the time required
to rewrite the startup architecture...

FYI, countless unix daemons that just don't provide a switch to change the
uid are used everyday without
anyone complaining :p
