Well, it apparently melted slightly in 2003 ;-)

I don't see how a couple of words to clarify that nearly everyone is
already doing base64 correctly would be anything but beneficial, but I
won't keep whining about it, nor will I hold my breath waiting for an
"official" reply.

Agreed. But unfortunately, fragmentation and confusion are inevitable
when a spec is frozen in a vague state, because people have to learn
the relevant history and dig through mailing list archives to find out
what the practical consensus is, and that is a laborious process with
unreliable results. Oh well, such is life.
