The work present on Xalan's code repos branch xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn, is an XSLT 3.0 processor that needs to be released as a beta version. This code is not backward compatible with Xalan's XSLT 1.0 implementation.

From my point of view, I think, Xalan's code on branches xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn and master should not be merged with each other in the git sense. If we do so, Xalan will loose a compliant XSLT 1.0 processor.

From what I can remember from previous discussions, Xalan's next release may comprise of two release archives, one from the branch xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn (which will be Xalan's XSLT 3.0 beta release) and another from the branch master (which will be Xalan XSLT 1.0 processor's new maintenance release).

The reason why Xalan's XSLT 3.0 processor jar dependencies are kept locally within xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn branch's libs directory, is because these specific jar dependencies are known to work correctly with the code within Xalan's branch xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn. It'll be fine, if the dependencies kept within libs folder may be fetched from Maven central repos, provided someone from Xalan team can publish these jars on Maven central repos.

Xerces can make a new release (which the Xerces team has to decide), which Xalan can use for new releases from branches xalan-j_xslt3.0_mvn and master.
