Initial Comment:
Currently, the maven-xsddoc-plugin will cause a build 
failure if ${maven.xsddoc.src} does not exist.

IMHO, a better way to handle such situations is the one 
implemented from for example the clover plugin. That 
plugin checks if java sources are present. If not, it 
doesn't register itsself.
This allows in subproject/reactor builds to define the 
clover report in the parent project. The report will be 
generated only for those subprojects with java sources.

I'll attach a modified plugin.jelly which does the same for 
the maven-xsddoc-plugin. The report will be registered 
only if a) ${maven.xsddoc.src} exists and b) at least 
one file is included from the resulting fileset. 

Please have a look at the patched file and include it in 
the upcoming 0.7 version, if you like it.
