xindice 1.0 - "Communication failure" - configuration issue?

Addmittedly not the most recent XIndice version, but it is an 
application that has up until now been running fine.
I get the following Java stack trace (see below), which indicates that 
the problem is detected in subsystems beneath XIndice.

But does this stack trace also indicate that the problem depends on a 
setting ("max wait time")?

If so, is it possible to increase this wait time in some way -- e.g. by 
suitable configuration in
 [xindice-1.0]/build.xml ?
 [xindice-1.0]/config/system.xml ?
or something like that
