BTW, unless and until the topic map community gets to where we can ask
questions, even pointed ones, about each other's work and even topic
maps, we aren't going anywhere quickly.

Aside to Lars: I suspect "semantic tools" didn't mean topic maps,
although it could have. 

There are any number of text analysis tools that are commonly available
but rarely used outside of analysis shops. Simply having a keyword in
context concordance would be a real boon. Rapidly extracting terms for
defined identifiers would speed up creation of uniform referencing.
Expanding the alphabet soup with unofficial access to some veterans. Any
number of things. 

Topic maps would enter much later, when it came time to integrate that
information store with that held by the newspaper or with data obtained
from other sources. Such as cross checking events with reportage in the
New York Times, for example. (Although I would not use occurrences even
there. I would prefer using associations so that NYT stories would also
exist as topics in associations with their authors. To enable the
spotting of patterns of authors on particular types of stories. Who
might or might not have additional sources. 

All of that is just guessing based on what I would do with an even
moderately financed effort to analyze the texts.
