One of the goals of TMQL is to replace TMAPI.
It should be possible to replicate all TMAPI-functionality with TMQL
(and more, of course).
It should even be possible to implement a TMAPI implementation on top
of TMQL (for whoever wants that (-; )

With direct-types and friends, this would be easily possible. From a
semantic point of view, they are not necessary. But when operating on
TMDM as data, they're very helpful.
