Problem with linux installation

Hi,

My PC with harddisk of 40 GB is installed with windows 2000 professional
edition in 32GB area. I now wish to install RedHat Linux on the rest 8 GB.

But whenever I try to do so by inserting a bootable Linux (redhat) CD the
following problem occurs
1. At first Linux detects the free area but allows me to create only 2
partitions i.e. the (/boot and / ) or (/boot and swap). After 2 partitions
have been created the installation gives message that there is no space
available. Please note that i create /boot of 100MB, / of 1000MB and swap of
600MB size.

2. If I continue installation without swap the installation works fine but
Linux doesnt boot giving error message: Attempt to kill init process

Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something? Can U suggest a way
which does not affect my windows partitions? Please Help
