Asbestos isn't a good thing to be wearing, particularly as underwear !

Java is controlled by a committee, and all major vendors other than MS 
are a part of each enhancement that goes into it. Perhaps now even MS 
will be a part of the JCP :(

Perhaps i could say that Sun plays the role that Linus plays for the 
Linux kernel.

Yes, we are not allowed to modify/enhance Java at will and 
redistribute, but that is more so that your code can run under all 
JVM's. It should not be that your application runs only under your own 
VM version or requires your JDK to run.

Actually you are allowed to modify and distribute the JDK/VM as long as 
its only within your own corporation.

OTOH, I admit that not being OS, has meant that Sun couldn't include 
some great OS API's , and had to actually rewrite the whole API - most 
of us have continued to use the existing OS API's. We haven't been 
silent on this, though.


There is frankly still a possibility that Java will become opensource.

To someone who has worked on Java for many years, its like damning a 
good child because it's illegitimate, or born to someone of another 
religion. I cant get myself to damn/trash Java for the sake of Sun, 
perhaps non-Java persons can.

 From what i know of Java, and other OOP languages - it would take years 
for the others to catch up with Java - just for starters their VM's and 
Garbage collectors are just too far behind. And for the kind of apps i 
work on that matters.
