You need a document management system, with abilities to index all kinds of 
documents. Currently I dont know of any dedicated FLOSS tool which does that.
With over a gigabyte of different documents, even I need such a tool. But most 
of the good available ones I once came across have been proprietary and 
expensive ones.

You can use htdig/swishe to just have indexing I guess.
