hi,
yes you will definitely require an ip addr
cause if you are suppose to go onto the internet
the mac addr will not be useful...
as the protocols online wouldnt be able to 
reconize it..
also if your protocl gets a global 
reconizition...and tcp/ip is made compatbale 
wit your protocol only then will it work...
and if you have developed it just for your internal
network a LAN based on mac addresses then anything
will go..
a work around for this would be have a DNS server
configured on your network which will understand all
your mac address and this will then send the 
packets for you to go on to the internet...
its a huge thing..
but will be very company specific...
