Dual boot Fedora

I have just installed Fedora 27 beta on my laptop alongside Fedora 26 and 
now I have lost access to Fedora 26 - what did I do wrong?

I had the laptop set up for two distributions from the start with a shared 
home and swap directory but separate root and efi directories - both 
systems were installed as UEFI. I have been running Fedora 26 for some time 
and the other partitions were just empty. When I installed Fedora 27 beta 
on the unused root and efi partiitions I get a grub menu as expected with 
both systems; Fedora 27 works but Fedora 26 now drops me to a maintenance 
screen.

Should I have separate boot partitions as well as efi partitions?

What is the recommended method of having two version of Fedora on the same 
machine?
