Sharing swap shouldn't cause any confusions. Sharing /boot might do though.

You mention you get a "maintenance screen"? What exactly does it show
you? You're getting to the "press ctrl-D for maintenance" prompt?

Sounds like a sound choice and possibly an indication a filesystem might
simply need an fsck check before being mounted rw ...
