NIS and GDM3

We have a small network running Debian with a server farming out /home over 
nfs4 and authentication with NIS to a few desktops. It has been running for 
years. I was just adding a new desktop and thought, for a bit of fun, I 
would use Debian Buster - I know its unstable. The new desktop runs and I 
can log into a terminal using NIS. I can see all the home files imported by 
NFS with idmap working correctly. I can log into gnome if the user is in 
declared locally. But if I try to log into gnome with a NIS user it fails.

I found reference to editing systemd-logind.service to remove 
IPAddressDeny=any which I have changed but I still can't log in - any ideas?
