[LIP] How does mplayer or wget display their output??

Hi,
   I used to think that Mplayer and wget refreshes the same line in a
console output using a ncurses library support, but I realize ncurses
needs a new screen to be set up to start with. Wget and Mplayer gives
their output on the console printing it starting from the line where
the command was given, so I believe they donot use ncurses. can some
one tell me how to achieve a similar output(refreshing the same line
on console on update).
