you have changed the authentication mode - prolly enabled something 
like kerberos or whatever. you can login at single user mode and 
adjust this - if you are a newbie, i suggest you get help because it 
is quite complicated to rectify in rh 9 - it happened to me sometime 
back and i solved it temporaly by shutting down iptables
