Which repository? Can you give the exact error message?

Moreover, Fedora Core 6 was end-of-lifed a long time back. So there is
a possibility that the mirrors might not be carrying the content any
more. If possible try to shift to Fedora 9 or Fedora 8.

Fedora 9 does not use Pirut. It uses PackageKit (http://packagekit.org).

What do you get on issuing the following command:
# yum repolist
