Sharing folders Ubuntu/Windoze

I've never really worried about sharing between my XP and my Ubuntu boxes, since 
I could always use a USB drive to transfer files; however, I was using my Ubuntu 
the other day, and I right-clicked on a file and saw the option to share with a 
windows box.

Bear in mind that I know nothing of how Samba or WINS works. Anyway, I took the 
bait, and shared a folder. It downloaded and installed some software (since this 
was the first time), and all appeared to go well.

Now, from my windows box, the Ubuntu computer appears, but when I try to browse 
inside, the windows asks me to log in. The icon makes it look like this is a 
windows login, and my Ubuntu username and password are not accepted. My windows 
box does not have a password.

I realise that I've given a very sketchy description of the problem, but can 
anyone guess what I've omitted, that's preventing this from working? I'm 
guessing that it may be related to my answer to a question about logging in, and 
where to log in to, which I got wrong because I didn't understand what it was 
asking. (Sorry... when Ubuntu was setting up the sharing, I mean.)

The windows login box is pre-populated with my hotmail address which I haven't 
used in several years (is this something to do with that "live" crap?) and if I 
just enter "andy" as the username, it fails, but comes back with BOOTS\andy in 
the field - BOOTS is the hostname of the Ubuntu.
