which wireless chipset is used? 

wikipedia lists 3 possible chipsets for that model laptop. (However as
it is a refurbished Dell it could be anything.)

the lspci command might give you a clue.
the dmesg command might help as well.

If it is Truemobile then try installing the b43-fwcutter package.
If it is the Intel 2200 try the command "sudo modprobe ipw2200."
