Thank you Damian You mentioned a number of things with which I am not familiar so will try them out. I just found out, shortly before reading your posting, that, indeed, xorg runs under the root and is necessary (as I found out!). What puzzles me is that it should be using up so much processor time. I am in the throes of turning things off to see if any peripheral is hogging cpu cycles. As far as I can make out, I have a dual core Celeron which, according to Intel, is only 1.6 GHz but, according to hardinfo is running at 3.2 GHz. One app. even suggests that it is running at 4 GHz! (At the moment, I don't want to go the trouble of ripping off the cooling fan and looking on the chip to see what exactly it is!). (I agree with your comment about the sledge hammer : I was endeavoring to paraphrase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!! when, I seem to remember, someone wants to take an ax to the shipboard computer on Heart of Gold!
