You could try the Xubuntu variant. If uses the XFCE desktop environment which is typically less resource intensive then Gnome or KDE. You can install Xubuntu without a reinstall using the tasksel command (I suspected there is a GUI equivalent too). You could also try Yellow Dog who specialize in PowerPC. I am not sure how much of a difference it will make. The performance of most distros are within a few percent of each other.
