This depends upon your window manager.

I haven't looked into Gnome for a while, and if they're using Metacity, I
don't believe they support more than 5 buttons native.

(scroll up + down are button 4 + 5)

Nor does KDE/kwin.

Anyhow, unless you want to use a cool WM like Sawfish, then you'll need
to use something like  imwheel to map the mouse buttons to keyboard
actions.  That is, if you want those mouse buttons to do something more
specific than just doubling for what other mouse buttons already do.

You don't just want those buttons to dupe for others, do you?
