Actually, that's exactly what I want to do.  On the Trackball Explorer 
the traditional "mouse button" fingers are used to move the trackball, 
and the thumb is left to handle all the tradition mouse buttons (left, 
right, scroll/middle).  What I've always done in the past is map the 
extra two buttons (Button 8 & 9 according to xev) to buttons 2 & 3 
(middle & right click), so I can use my ring finger & pinkie to handle 
middle & right clicking.
