Thanks to all those who gave me some pointers to the mystery of where my e-mails had gone. I had tried re-installing Fedora and reinstalling evolution (using yum) but to no avail. The final solution lay in the suggestion to switch clients -- so I fired up Thuderbird instead and I can now send AND receive e-mails AND see where they are!
