look for the /home/<your profile name>/.evolution folder
in there look for /mail/local ans you should see a large file called
inbox that's where your mail should be hiding.

Check the date modified and see if it's getting updated when you
download mail.

If you don't see the inbox file, try "find / -name inbox" from the
command line. It will/should give you you some permission denied
messages but should also find the inbox if it is anywhere on your
system. 

I am afraid that I can't help you with the repair part as evolution has
worked flawlessly for me. Before you start poking about, backup the
inbox file and possibly other files e.g. sent.
