That's funny, because that's exactly what I did with one of mine - LOL! I got a "deep cycle" battery from Costco for $54 when they were on offer. It does work, but I ran it for a couple of hours with a small load, and I was concerned about the heat generated inside the UPS. I don't think these things are continuously rated. I was going to post a picture for a joke, but you see, there's an 'issue'. The battery terminals are NOT isolated from the mains. I measured 60V from ground to the terminals. That doesn't sound lethal, but with kids wandering around, I'm not ready to leave it powered up until I've secured it in some way. Also... I put an "inline" auto fuse on mine, it doesn't look like the hackaday guy did - that's a fire hazard, eh?
