ATI or NVidia ?

I have a desktop, on which I added an ATI card, in order to get two
displays. I have the following problem: If I want to watch videos, I
have to revert to the default, open source, driver. But if I wan to have
the desktop widgets and key bindings for multiple desktops, I need to
use Compiz, which does not work with the default driver. 

My card, although not branded ATI, is an ATI OEM of some kind (a cheapo
card bought in a local store). 

I am wondering whether I should invest in a better ATI card, or an
NVidia. Which one would be the most likely to be supported by an open
source driver ?
