I have several computers with ATI (AMD) Radeon HD 4000 cards using the
opensource radeon driver without issues. I have also had decent luck
with x1300 and up cards.

Before you go out and buy a new card:
Which ATI chip does your card use?
Which distro and version are you using?

Are you trying to drive two monitors with one card or two cards? A
single card will likely work best.
