Ubuntu upgrade help

Often, the biggest impediment to finding help is knowing what you're trying to do. That's where I am... please help me determine what I should be trying to do - I can do the rest, google is my friend. My computer was going slow because pulseaudio was consuming ~50% of the processor. I determined that pulseaudio was broken in Ubuntu 8.x and started the upgrade process to 10.x. Things didn't go too well on restart; it told me the graphics was wrong and it was running in "low graphics mode". I restarted again, and the mouse wasn't working. Without the mouse I couldn't even restart, so I hit the hardware reset. After this, the graphics autodetected the correct resolution (1680x1050), however, I don't seem to be using the Nvidia driver. Actually, that may not be true: if I go to "configure NVIDIA X server settings" it tells me that it's not running. Is that the video driver, or something else? How can I tell if my NVidia drivers are still working after the upgrade? If I type "ps -elf | grep nv" I get nothing except the grep command. It's hard to tell if my graphics are working properly. If I grab a window and shake it about, it moves nicely, but it takes a while for the background to redraw. But it was like that before, it's only a single core 2.0Ghz computer. Webkinz and Youtube are not working - this is my fundamental issue. It tells me that the Adobe Flash plugin has crashed. But what should I try to fix? Is Adobe broken (no funny answers please) or is it barfing because the Nvidia is missing? (Side issues that may or may not be related: 1. My power-off button has disappeared and been replaced with a green AOL running man, so I have to go to System -> shut down. 2. My window frame style has changed; I don't care a hoot about the colour, but the "X" has moved from the top right to the top left, which is unacceptable. 3. Thunderbird is using 40% - 60% of the CPU when it's doing nothing. Perhaps it's doing 'background folder compaction' or something, but it could be more serious. 4. And ironically, sound is no longer working.)
