bs on dd

If I use the dd command to create the image of, say, a USB disk, and use
bs=2048, for example, can I use a different value when writing to
another USB disk, or should I keep the same value for both reading and
writing ? 

Also, the value I used above, 2048 is for blocks of 2K. Can I imprive
the performance using, say, values that would be higher like 1048576 or
1M, or other ?
