Most allow a "specially crafted webpage" (think glugle, amacon, farcekook, clodfair etc AKA TLAs) to allow the attacker to gain remote control of your machine just by allowing thunderbird to render html/javascript in emails, or allowing it to open PDFs or other documents. It's a whack-a-mole. They fix it one week, and the next they're fixing new backdoors mozilla has introduced. Sylpheed was secure, but I think they killed that. Not sure about Claws.
