Pittsfield Woman Wanted The Right To Go Shirtless

BOSTON -- It was perhaps the most provocative question on a ballot in
Massachusetts Tuesday: the attempt to redefine nudity so that women
could go shirtless while walking, biking or swimming in public.

However, the initiative of Katherine Gundelfinger, 39, of Pittsfield,
to give women the same rights as men was resoundingly defeated by
voters in the Third Berkshire District.

There were just 2,934 votes in favor of the question, while 6,855
voted against it.

"I think it was a complete waste of time for most people," Jim
Watroba, of Pittsfield, told the Berkshire Eagle. "They're not doing
this anywhere in public."

Gundelfinger has pushed for passage under what she called a woman=92s
"equal access to sunshine=94

=93Here I am, a grown woman, who can=92t go for a swim and feel the sun on
my chest and feel comfortable,=92=92 Gundelfinger said before the
election. She declined comment after the votes were counted.

The question, which was nonbinding, was on the ballot only in the
Third Berkshire District and proposed to change the legal definition
of nudity, so that the same rules apply to both men and women.

=93Absolutely not, I voted no," said Denise Yon of Pittsfield. "I have a
12-year-old daughter. Clearly, the vote is no. And I asked everyone
around me, and they said no, too."

The district has about 40,000 residents and 230 signed Gundelfinger=92s
petition, which placed the question on the ballot.
