(which all seems a bit callous to me lol) so no, not only in cases where society took pity on others for whatever reason and tried to look after them (although undoubtedly there was some of that too, particularly in families unlike the inuit) but because it was/became generally recognised that spiritually advanced people often behaved in unusual, sometimes seemingly totally crazy ways! the average man in the street being unable to discern genuine madness from those spiritually advanced, it became normal to consider that that might be the case and so rather than shunning them like they do today, they honoured & revered them instead...
