i have read all the mails. i even read the subtext.

hey, i'm all for it if someone finds a sponsor for it.

we'll gladly point php.net subdomains at them (like we did for
chiphpug.php.net).

if a usergroup wants a mailing list to be set up, all they need to do is
ask.

how is that not the point? i thought we were talking about evangelizing
php. i'm not sure how else you do that besides writing and talking about
php.

i have read all the mails here. i haven't seen anything suggested that
does not already exist. all i see is a desire to build yet another php
article and tutorials site.

you ignored the second part of my question. if some boss doesn't want
his employee connecting to an existing irc network because it has
gaming/sex/whatever channels, clearly the openprojects network addresses
this problem. it doesn't have those channels.

not keeping operator priviliges is an openprojects network policy. there
was almost certainly an operator lurking in the channel.

huh? solution to what problem? an 'official' place for people to talk
about php? how is it less good than some standalone irc.php.net server
just because there's more people on efnet and more active people on
ircnet? right now this theoretical standalone irc.php.net has got zero
users.

and yet it does. and nobody is playing silly games with operator
privileges, either.

(efnet and ircnet split from the same source? frankly, i haven't paid
much attention to the shenanigans of the various irc networks since
undernet formed.)

look, irc.php.net points at irc.openprojects.net right now. i haven't
heard any good reason why pointing this at a standalone server wouldn't
be a significant step backwards. you gave a good reason for not pointing
irc.php.net at efnet or ircnet. in the grand scheme of things, the
number of people we want to evangelise that use irc is not all that
significant. i think we're just flogging a very dead horse. let's move
on to some actual evangelism!
