Please take into account that PHP 4 was almost 100% backwards
compatible to PHP 3, the list of incompatible changes including
explanations did fit on a single sheet of paper.

 From PHP 4 to 5 you have a completely different OO implementation
though (and a few other changes), so while porting from 3 to 4
usually was easy and often didn't require any application code
changes at all the story is completely different when it comes
to porting from 4 to 5, especially with object oriented PHP 4
applications.

So as our major releases become less backwards compatible over
time (and this is going to become an even bigger issue with
PHP 5 -> 6 afaict) we'll simply have to live with slower
adoption rates and longer in-parallel maintenance intervals ...
