It should  or could yes. I build the package on my ubuntu (last
stable) but it is definitively too new.

I have to find a host with 2.59, Etch also has 2.61. It sounds like I
will have to either install it in my ~ or use a vm with a sarge
install. Autoconf 2.59 is four years old. I suspect Mandriva to have
kept it for PHP (PHP was requiring this version).
