Mandrive 2008 has 2.61, but not all my machines were upgraded to 2008.

Anyhow, I re-ran   
  aclocal; autoconf; autoheader; automake; ./configure; make
using the 2.59 toolchain and it worked fine.  I then used the new library
to run off gnuplot's entire collection of demos, and didn't spot any
problems.
