But it does help the mentors, and admins, to follow eachothers
projects better - and anyone who is interested in following the gsoc
students.
I for one don't subscribe to the PHP-GTK lists, but I'd like to follow
the gsoc project (for an example) and help out if I can.

We said from the start; Students should send emails to the relevant
mailinglist (obviously), but CCing this list is a great way to have
all gsoc information in the same place.
Take this thread also for example, it has _nothing_ with phpdoc@,
pear-dev@, php-webmaster@, internals@, ... to do.
Discussing this on any other list is plain wrong.

I agree. Only php.net projects this year please.
