Hi Lester,
Magento is written completely in PHP and no PHP code should ever crash PHP. If this happens it is a problem (or bug) in PHP not in Magento.
I got Apache 2.4 from apachelounge.com but the problem occurs in PHP's built-in web server, too.

Yes, everything else works fine. I am running Magento 1.5.x or Symfony 2.0.x without any problems.

http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/ will probably be a better place to ask.
They should at least be looking at PHP5.4 support, but where are you getting
Apache 2.4 from? I presume other php test code works?
