You said that the code seems to have completed before the crash point? I debug this type of problem by dropping a print and die pair to find where the problem is ... although with error reporting ON you should get something? > Yes, everything else works fine. I am running Magento 1.5.x or Symfony 2.0.x without any problems. This would indicate that it is really the Magneto team that need to pin down the problem so they can advise and design around it.
