Yes, that's possible. And I was going to suggest it as well. Folks
still using PHP 4 are welcome to do so and they'll still be able to use
PEAR and its packages, just the older versions that they have now.
This seems fine to me. If you're stuck on PHP 4, you know you're using
outdated, buggy software. PEAR will continue to work for them, but it
too will be the outdated, buggy version.
