To grant maintainership, we usually ask developers to provide a few pull requests to indicate their level of knowledge of the package and their ideas about directions they want to take the package in. If you could do a few PRs on Github to show us the kinds of things you already know you want to improve upon, that will show us what we need in order to grant the maintainership.
