I don't think, there will be XSLT support by default in PHP5. I'd like 
to have that as much as you do, but even making libxml2 a prerequisite 
caused some discussion on php-dev recently. Therefore adding another 
dependency (libxslt) is most certainly a no-go.

Maybe one solution could be with (just brainstorming, I have no idea 
what php's policy is about that) a new configure switch like

--with-xml-all

and all xml extensions (simplexml, dom, xsl, soap, xml, wddc) would be 
compiled in.
