Yes, it is different from what we had with CVS but what we have done was not exactly clean either. The layout issue is related to operation like full checkout of PECL, which makes little sense in day to day operations. Only repetitive tasks do such thing (backups, web updates, tests, etc.) and they are done using scripts. What I would suggest is to keep it as it is now and get used to it :) However, Rasmus concerns are actually valid, what's the status about them (perf issues with rsync and related tools)?
