Hackathon as a second monthly meetup

I am noticing attendance dwindles quite a bit during the summer in South 
Florida, so am thinking of kicking off a new (second) monthly meeting as 
a hackathon.  Has anyone else tried this?  Any pitfalls? What sort of 
location would be best for this? (Panera Bread, coffee shop, library, 
bar/grill?)

Any feedback on the idea is welcomed.
