Yeah, I've gotta renew Meetup.com for Lake / Kenosha PHP this month too.  I
funded the initial 6 months by writing an article for php|architect about
starting a user group (how meta!) and took up a collection for the second 6
months.  Situated pretty far out in the suburbs, I haven't found many PHP
shops or recruiters out this way.  I agree with the OP... You need a group
to build the community, but you need the community (developers and
recruiters) to have a sustainable group.
