We (NYPHP) had considered it years ago and in fact went pretty far
along with some fellow attorneys/accountants that were involved in the
group.

We concluded:

-- there's considerable paperwork involved; initially and on an ongoing basis
-- similarly, the government doesn't like anyone not paying taxes
-- why do we actually need to accept tax-free money?
-- it's a user's group comprised of people looking to make learn,
socialize and make money - that's not a non-profit organization :)

Long story short:  too much overhead, money, and, end of the day, no
real benefits.
