Beth, As a sincere and devoted follower of Jesus, I'd like to say two things to you: 1) I'm sorry this guy is doing this. Perhaps he's pretty excited about Jesus, but this is still not okay. Disrespect towards leadership of a group like yours is definitely not in line with the heart, intent, or statements of Jesus (nor the rest of the Christian Bible). 2) Go ahead and kick him out of the group, as he stated that this is a viable option. You'll only be hurting your group - both now and long term - if you let him stay. I fully get not wanting to ask someone to leave, but then the words of Spock (which actually come indirectly from the Christian Bible!) come to mind, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few/one." A suggestion: write up a code-of-conduct for your group. Feel free to contact Tessa at the Seattle PHP Meetup/Users Group - she's great and is also in the middle of redoing/rethinking their code-of-conduct (good timing). Lastly: I've run into situations like yours (religious issues, threats of harm, etc.) mainly when someone has stopped taking medication for mental health. Interestingly, for me, I was able to ask them if they were on meds and had stopped taking them... every time the person answered "yes" to both. Perhaps it's worth asking? My two cents, David On Jan 20, 2016 1:32 PM, "Beth Tucker Long" <[email protected]> wrote: > > We have a member who just started coming to our conference and user group meetings. At the conference, he consistently cornered people to talk to them about Jesus. He has started doing it at the meetings too. We have asked him to stop and explained that this is not an appropriate venue for these discussions and that the discussions need to stay PHP-focused. He has replied that he cannot stop talking about Jesus, and that if we want him to stop, we'll have to kick him out of the group. We responded with a firm response clarifying that our group is not the appropriate venue for his preaching and that discussions must stay on topic. We did not say he was banned from the group. He has not taken the hint and has now tried contacting the group leadership through the conference website (he apparently doesn't realize that we are the same people) asking for a face-to-face meeting to discuss these issues. > > Has anyone dealt with anything like this in their group? We do not want this to get ugly as we are a small group and this person has not caused issues in the past, so this is a new thing that started recently (in November). Any advice? > Thanks, > Beth > > > > -- > Beth Tucker Long > Treeline Design, LLC > 807 Arbor Vitae Place > Verona, WI 53593 > 608-770-6677 > http://www.TreelineDesign.com > > > -- > Usergroup Coordination Mailing List (http://ug.php.net) > To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php >
