SMP causing APIC errors

The board in question here is an itox with P-3 800s in it.
I posted a similar problem here before and the solution was
to turn off high memory support. I'd prefer high memory on
as I'd like the use of my top 100M or so of RAM, but as it
turns out, high memory doesn't seem to have an effect either
way.
I'm able to run it with nosmp (with high memory and without).
Without nosmp, I get a flurry of APIC errors and the system
is very unstable (often requiring me to boot with init=/bin/sh).
I've tried a couple of 2.6.4 kernels. One with high mem, one
without. The dmesg logs with "safe" in the name refers to an
extended command line I tried (nolapic noapic acpi=force pci=noacpi
noirqbalance acpi_irq_nobalance). I have 4 dmesg logs attached:
dmesg-hi-2.6.4 = 2.6.4 with high memory support. No command line args.
dmesg-hi-safe-2.6.4 = 2.6.4 with high memory support. The aforementioned
command line.
dmesg-nohi-2.6.4 = 2.6.4 without high memory support. No command line args.
dmesg-nohi-safe-2.6.4 = 2.6.4 without high memory support. The aforementioned
command line.
Another thing that's odd, but has no effect either way is that the
BIOS's MPS is set to 1.4, but in dmesg, it's set to 1.1. I've tried
booting with both settings in the BIOS without any luck.
Any ideas on what to try?
