i think adding a book should not be doable by anybody. maybe anyone can
propose a book and then some opinions/votes can be done and then it can
be added. i just don't want it to become unfocused and off topic. i
liked foo for dummies is clutter no matter what. so IMO a book needs to
pass some minimal level of community or cabal moderation before it gets
in. then the opinions and votes can be used to filter it some more.

that could be done. again, i like the idea of a cabal which can seed
some weights initially to get things moving. certain books and reviewers
are already respected and would rise to the top eventually so let's get
them there earlier.

i agree. most respected authors can review related books without getting
too out of joint. in fact you want others who know the subject to do the
reviewing. and if many others like the book and some competing author
doesn't, then his vote will be less critical.

another idea is personal libraries. what books does a user already
have/read? and also a greatest hits kinda thing. a list of the most
recommended books (maybe by topic or whatever). these are later
features.

i am sure we can add many more but let's focus on the first
phase. i think the basic DB needs to get started soonish and also a
basic search/vote/ratings UI needs to be designed.
